CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Before I knew it, my coffee date with Senator McHale was here. Unfortunately, his packed schedule had only allowed for a time right after my photography class, which meant my free time between class and work was gone.

When Carter learned of the meeting, he’d been concerned because of Katherine, but what could we do? Senator McHale was the reason I was at HSU.

I’d been confused about why the senator would want to meet with me, but Carter had the explanation. It was all about showing that he was following up with the student he’d sponsored so he could mention me organically and help the public to remember what he’d done for me.

Even though I hated being used as a pawn, the senator had offered me a chance I’d never have been able to afford otherwise, and the least I could do was express my gratitude.

Thankfully, he’d picked a coffee shop that was off campus but near the university, so I was able to walk there with only a slight bit of grief from Carter.

Caffeine Latte was about a half mile down the road from HSU’s main entrance. The parking lot in front of the shop was full, and I jogged across the street, hoping like hell that Senator McHale had gotten caught up with political responsibilities and wouldn’t show.

When I stepped through the double glass front doors, I saw that the shop had five round tables in front and a bar table with high-top chairs against the glass window. The place smelled of coffee grounds, but my stomach was so tight that if I tried to drink something, I’d probably get sick.

Of course, Senator McHale was already there, seated at the table closest to the mocha-colored wall. He was facing the glass doors and waving at me as if I wouldn’t see him. A younger man, I assumed was his assistant, sat at a table beside us. The young man nodded at me then went back to pecking away on an iPad, likely organizing all the senator’s commitments.

The place was fairly busy, but somehow, the senator had co-opted the entire table, and one empty chair sat across from him.

Adjusting the backpack on my arm, I went over and plopped into the seat. I tried to smile, but it felt false even to me.

“Hello, Evie. Thank you for coming.” Senator McHale nodded and gestured at the cup in front of my chair. “The place was busy, so I got you a skinny vanilla latte. I hope that’s all right. Katherine likes them.”

“That’s great.” I forced out the words because I hated sugar-free anything. For some reason, the artificial sweetener always tasted disgustingly sweet, and I feared it would make me even more nauseous. I raised the cup to my lips and pretended to take a sip, not wanting to be rude. “Thank you. It’s perfect.”

His shoulders relaxed, and he leaned back, taking a drink from his own cup. “I appreciate you meeting me here. I meant to come and see you sooner, but I haven’t had a ton of time despite being a board member.
